Was It Hand Registered, Expired, Other?
What Got You Started Domaining?
What was your first domain name? Did you make it up (hand register) or purchase it? How did you decide it was the one to get? What tools did you use for domain research? When did you acquire it? Do you still have it?
Domain Vetting
I love domain hunting, having started in 2004, buying my first domain after taking a class as a GoDaddy trainee. The process was simple. Write the name on paper, click, and register. Voila! I had my first domain. My vetting process – ask a supervisor what he thought. My supervisor looked at my scribbling. Trying to hide his grimace, not wanting to be too critical, he dryly replied, “Are you sure that’s the one? Generally, shorter domains are preferred.”
Thereafter, I opted for shorter domain names than my first, 22-letter domain:
“GetSomethingForNothing.com”
The Details
- Hand Registered / Other: HR
- Vetting Process: Asked a supervisor for his opinion.
- When: 2004
- Reason: Thought no one could resist a “get something for nothing” website.
